Growing Up in Santa Cruz

January 2026

New Year, New Looks

Cheers to another year, and another year of serious outfits. New year pushes everyone itching to change themselves, and start brand new. Driving and overexhausting yourself all within the first month. When January really is a time to reflect, take care of yourself, and slowly plan ahead, craving healthy change for the better. This month we are taking a look at three individuals whose exceptional style is an echo of their inner growth.

Jake

Say hi to Jake, a pristine example of someone whose genuinity radiates through his attire. Jake is wearing a strong late 90s rugged workwear adjacent outfit. Starting with a vintage Ed Hardy hat and green Carhartt jacket he picked up from a friend in Germany due to his constant traveling. Underneath is a simple Ed Hardy graphic T-shirt. Followed by his favorite Carhartt silhouette, WIP Brandon’s baggy heavy denim. Tied together with heavily skated Nike SBs Dunk Fogs he picked up from Santa Cruz’s local Bills Wheels Skate Shop. Jake’s outfit is a prime example of his personal ethics. Jake values comfort, function and authenticity. He cares about how things feel and age rather than looking polished. This outfit represents who he is becoming. “Still rooted in skating, but more intentional and grown.” With his colors, clothing and silhouette mirroring his daily emotion; grounded, comfortable, confident and unique. Appreciating the personal change he sees, gravitating towards a baggier silhouette, something he steered clear from in the past, but embraces now with confidence. Jake has his own clothing brand that represents clothing items that are lived in, just slightly damaged and unique, a detail that matters most to him. When it comes to choosing an outfit a silhouette comes first, fabric second and color lastly in Jake’s book. Due to the new year Jake not only thought about the day ahead but the new year as well, feeling like a “realistic reset-not forced”.

George

George starts the new year as another day, he feels “the new year isn’t a reset, but more of a continuation of what he’s already been doing in life and changes will come as time goes on.” George is repping a soft vintage, retro lounge meets streetwear outfit. Accessorizing with orange polarized sunglasses from Amazon. Matching with the brownish/orange leather jacket and orange dress shirt, as well as the white pants thrifted from Ecothrift. Held by his pale yellow belt thrifted from Goodwill. Lastly, kicking back in the White Chelsea boots from Doc Martens. With the majority of the outfit being thrifted, this reveals George’s value in the importance of thrifting. Showing notable pieces from your wardrobe can be bought without selling a left kidney for. This outfit reflects George’s personal fashion growth. Allowing himself to wear a color he used to avoid, pushing out of his comfort zone encouraged him to think what other colors or pieces he was avoiding that could be hidden gems. George’s confidence flows from within, pouring itself on to the clothes, “you wear the clothes, the clothes don’t wear you.” as George would say. George is a great example of pushing boundaries, and thinking out of the box. George recommends searching in other gender’s clothing, if you can’t find the right fit, sometimes a different size in a different gender category can help out the overall suitability. George’s orange shirt is a Women’s xl, allowing a nice relaxed fit without wearing a men’s more sharp and overly big button spacing. High quality textures and fabric are important to him, promoting anti-fast fashion.

Inti

Inti is a great template of someone who has found beautiful results by pushing himself out of his comfort zone. Forgetting about beating yourself up over a choice because you are too scared to try it out. Inti is wearing an alternative underground streetwear outfit with a touch of creative playfulness. Starting with accessories both from Black and Brown Thrift, the square wide glasses and classy black pointed dress shoes. A casual sweater thrifted from a local Goodwill. And the statement piece spiderweb jeans are handmade personal designs of his as well as the custom belt made from alligator printed leather, all made from scratch by himself. This outfit indicates Inti’s value in his own personal designs and silhouettes, falling back in love with his own creative process, something his past self would fight shy of. Embracing someone who is emerging into his future self. Putting his outfit on felt rewarding, not only because of the hardwork and perfection of a project coming out right but because he is trying something new and not hating it. Inti prefers fabric and silhouette when choosing clothes. A quality item that fits just right, nothing beats that. This ensemble is a toast to the new year and everything he can’t wait to see and ideas come to life.
