The Santa Cruz Harbor offers visitors many attractions, but perhaps the most surprising is regular free concerts from hundreds of crooning ukulele players. For more than 20 years, the Santa Cruz Ukulele Club has assembled enthusiasts of the mini, four-string Hawaiian guitar with regular gatherings around town. The most popular is likely the Saturday morning gathering at Harbor Beach, behind the Crow’s Nest. Stop by and enjoy the aloha shirt-wearing orchestra of strumming players who belt out familiar songs such as California Dreaming and Margaritaville. Bring whatever you would bring for a day at the beach, and if you have a ukulele bring that too. Hope to see you there!

Screening at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz. Featuring a line up of adrenaline inducing yet heart touching films, witness the very best stories from the likes of an epic surf trip to the untouched waves of eastern Russia in winter, or visually feast on breathtaking seascapes as an Australian man attempts to make a wing foiling world record, or venture to the Arctic with a team of explorers and scientists to discover why the earth is losing sea ice. Free Family Fun: Birds, Birds, and More Birds
For this month’s Family Fun event, we will be birding on East Cliff Drive along the San Lorenzo River! Museum Staff will provide binoculars for each participant and share helpful tips for identifying birds during this walk. Saturday, September 9, 2023 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Location: Lower Seabright | San Lorenzo River FREE EVENT Limited space available. Please register on the Museum website. Email [email protected] with any questions, accommodation requests, or if you have trouble registering. Accessibility Please expect some uneven ground (but mostly paved surfaces), moving out of the way for cyclists, crossing the street, and walking up and down the ramps by the railroad trestle. Youth under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. All ages welcome. Instructors will adapt the program for the needs of the group. We will travel 1.5 – 2 miles depending on the abilities of the group. Binoculars and monoculars will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite birding tools. Restrooms will be available at the Museum at the start of the program. Wear layers, comfortable shoes, sun protection, and bring any snacks/water you might need. Follow the latest guidelines for COVID safety at the time of the program.

Calling all homeschool families! Come to the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park on Friday, September 15th for a special field trip day of hands-on learning. Running from 10am-3pm, homeschool students of all ages are invited to join us at their own pace for a series of self-directed Mission education activities, including an investigative exploration of our 200 year old building, Mission Clues visual scavenger hunt, adobe brick making, archaeology sorting, story reading of “When the Mission Bells Rang” by Judith Scott & Lydia Gibson, discussion on our Mission Bell Virtual Exhibit, and more. The Santa Cruz Triathlon, originally called the Tin Man Triathlon and then the Sentinel Triathlon, was founded in 1982, eight years after the first triathlon raced in San Diego. Our first annual race, held on October 16, 1983, started a tradition that brings triathletes together from near and far.

Follow along with local artist, Ana of Follow the Sun, to create your own Sea Otter inspired masterpiece! In just two hours you will be guided, step by step, in creating our painting of the day. Great for complete beginners and seasoned creatives alike. You have the freedom to add your personal touch – tweak the colors & composition, or just follow along with the instruction! We will learn and practice various painting techniques as we go, with plenty of room for creativity. One-on-one help is always available & all supplies are included – 16″x20″ canvas, paint, brushes, and aprons. Class will be set in the outdoor space of Abbott Square, weather permitting.
