Big Basin Redwoods First Day Hike
Join Ranger Brian on early morning First Day Hike!What to Expect: This .7 mile loop trail features slight elevation gains. Big Basin is a forest in recovery following the devastating CZU Fire of 2020. Throughout the hike we'll discuss the role that fire plays in the area's ecology, and the past and future of Big Basin. Length of Hike: 0.7 mile, 1 hoursPreparation: Dress in layers, including raingear. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are recommended. Mornings in Big Basin can be foggy and damp. There is currently no potable water in Big Basin, so bring bottled water or purchase at the kiosk. Special Instructions: The hike will happen rain or shine. The trail may be muddy and slippery, so shoes with ankle support are recommended. The most direct route to Big Basin is from Highway 236 from downtown Boulder Creek. Parking: Parking is $10 per car payable by debit, credit, or Apple Pay only. No cash accepted. Parking may be reserved ahead of time for $8. Where: The Forest of Nisene Marks at George's Picnic Area next to the steel bridge. When: 9:00 am - 1:00 pmWhat: Join us for a four mile, 4 hour walk to the site where the town of Loma Prieta was located and the hidden spot deep in the redwood forest where marine fossils can be found. We will encounter the remains of the old lumber mill, follow the trail of the ghost trestles and learn about the wonders of our giant redwoods and their survival. No pets allowed.What to Bring: Bring warm layers, the forest can be cold this time of year. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, a walking stick, water and a light snack. Parking: Vehicle day use fee is $8.00.

On Fuel Reduction Workday, in which park staff manually clear fallen debris in select areas of the Redwood Grove, and by doing so, reduce the fuel load and restore old-growth habitat. Park staff will facilitate organizing this debris into brush piles. Participants should be prepared to help with a fair deal of manual labor. Pleasure Point: Surf Competition
This weekend, head to Pleasure Point Hook to cheer on the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League competition. Throughout the season, they organize a series of five exciting events, carefully designed to test the mettle of the participants and create a thrilling atmosphere for spectators. Middle and high school surfers will compete in divisions for boys and girls in both Shortboard and Longboard disciplines, recognizing and celebrating the diverse talents that make up our surfing community.

Hike at Big Basin with one of our knowledgeable docents and plant enthusiast through the majestic Redwoods post fire. See which plants are thriving after the CZU Lightning Complex fire and possibly see some Banana Slugs! Plan for 3 hours of easy walking and 2-4 miles on trails and fire roads. Dress in Layers, bring water and a snack. Rain or high wind will cancel. Participation is free, however, a $10 vehicle day-use fee will be charged upon arrival, or we recommend you reserve a parking spot by clicking here. The Downtown Santa Cruz Market runs year-round on Wednesdays, 1-5pm year round. Our largest and oldest market, it is situated in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz, one block off of Pacific Avenue. Established in 1990, many of the farms that sell here were and remain pillars of the organic and ecological farming movement. This is the place to eat with the seasons! The variety of fruits, vegetables, flowers, pastured meats and other products is swoon worthy. The Downtown Market also spotlights a large variety of up-and-coming, unique cultural food businesses. The Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health offers free Parent Drop-Ins, 1-hour sessions where parents can seek guidance from experts specializing in specific youth mental health disorders. Parents can also connect with others facing similar challenges. Each Zoom session is hosted by expert clinical psychologists who specialize in anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance use, suicidality, and psychotropic medication. Parent Drop-Ins are held on the last Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm. Register to receive the Zoom link, and submit questions ahead of time.
