Tell us about an intense or fun surfing memory

So many memories. I am having trouble focusing on one. I love traveling to Mexico to surf. We have had wonderful times in Nexpa and San Blas, but I always love coming home to surf the spots I know best with my surf buddies here usually around Manresa/Aptos area.

What is your occupation

High school history teacher

Do you have any significant community involvement?

Mainly as a teacher.

Tell us something unique about you as a mother who surfs with/without your kiddos

My husband Pancho who is a dedicated (basically lives there on weekends from November to March) Moss Landing surfer is originally from San Blas, Mexico and we go down there a few times a year to surf. San Blas has an amazing long wave in Mantenchen Bay that if the swell is right breaks forever. So surfing in San Blas and knowing all the locals who are so kind to me since Pancho is kind a a legend down there is an amazing experience. The waves, the fun vibes, the warm water :). It is also a great place to learn to surf and Miguel’s (my son) favorite surf spot-that he talks about all the time- is 1st point at Mantenchen Bay.
When my daughters Isabella (18) and Daniela (16) were younger and could travel more easily (they are severely disabled and medically fragile) they loved playing in the warm water as the water is too cold for them in SC and there is no way to put a wet suit on them.

What is your most memorable surf moment with your kids?

My daughters are disabled so they are not able to surf, but surfing with my son Miguel who is 11 at Capitola with no one else out in stormy weather and trading fun little waves when he was just getting more confident to out past the first jetty was awesome a month or so ago. Lots of high fives and smiles. I just asked Miguel what our best surf moment was and he said and I quote “Just tell them that you always drop on me and that it’s ok and I think it is kind of funny”. I don’t agree with that claim, but there you are:)

What are some challenges of surfing related to motherhood?

Finding time to surf waves I like without feeling guilty about not taking my son who is not comfortable in surf with much size.
