Tell us about an intense or fun surfing memory
One fun and intense memory I have was arriving at Tamarindo, Costa Rica after a red eye flight. My trip overlapped with my good friend Joe’s trip by 12 hours. Joe insisted that we have a surf together before his family returned back to Santa Cruz. We paddle out in the windy afternoon conditions with me having zero energy. After a bit Joe exclaimed “Look, a turtle!” As we watched the “turtle” the tail came up a good 8 feet from the head. At that point we realized it was a crocodile. My energy went from nada to 200% and like cartoon characters we paddled out of the water. I remember thinking that this was something we never worry about in Santa Cruz.
What is your occupation
Teacher
Do you have any significant community involvement?
Friendly on the break-I know no stranger.
Tell us something unique about you as a mother who surfs with/without your kiddos
I get great joy in surfing and traveling on surf trips with my boys. To me this all seems normal, but I often get told how lucky I am to have this experience to share with them.
What is your most memorable surf moment with your kids?
I have fond memories surfing with my boys when they were in their early teens. While I could embarrass them easily by my mere existence on land, they would always yell “YEAH MOM!” when I got a good wave.
What are some challenges of surfing related to motherhood?
FOMO is real-sometimes I have to think about my priorities to make sure I’m not putting the waves before my family and responsibilities.
