Growing Up in Santa Cruz

Why I’m Crazy About Squishies

One day I was at a store called Bookshop Santa Cruz and I saw a green Glow in the Dark NeeDoh and I asked my dad if I could get it. I didn’t think he would agree, but he thought about it and said yes, because in a few days or something I was going to Germany without my dad, who would join us two weeks later.

He said he wanted to get the NeeDoh for me because then I would have something to play with on the airplane and so that then I would remember him whenever I played with my NeeDoh. He also got one for my sister Coco. That same day, my best friend Stella also got a NeeDoh, so we all got matching NeeDohs on the same day.

That was my first NeeDoh in my life. I was so happy that I got a NeeDoh. I liked it right away and soon loved it. NeeDohs are good because in my opinion they help people concentrate. I can sit with my NeeDoh for a long time, squeezing it in my hand.

My dad read me this from The New York Times: “The toys are a tactile experience. In addition to squishies, fidget toys include poppable silicon bubbles and bendable, scrunchable rubber straws, many of which brand themselves as stress-relief items. NeeDoh, those textured gum drops and ice cubes are currently on Amazon’s best-selling toy list, describes its pliable, inedible doughs as a way to mellow.”

The newspaper reporter also talked to a mom in Hawaii, who said: “I was shocked at how much complete joy a squishy could bring.”

I had a lot of fun with my green Glow in the Dark NeeDoh on our family trip to Germany and also Prague, where my mom and dad and Coco and I rode our bikes, then after we were back we went to Bookshop Santa Cruz again, this time without my dad, only my mom. There was like a whole shelf of NeeDohs, including NeeDoh gumdrops and other types that kids like to trade.

At school a lot of kids trade NeeDohs and other squishies. I like to trade NeeDohs with my sister and also sometimes I trade NeeDohs for other NeeDoh types and other squishies. My teacher at Live Oak Elementary, Ms. L, bought herself three squishies.

I like to shop for NeeDohs at this store at the Capitola Mall called Toys Hut. Other stores run out, because so many people love NeeDohs, but Toys Hut doesn’t really run out. I don’t know why. At Toys Hut they have NeeDoh nice cubes like Fanta and Dr. Pepper NeeDohs. Personally I pretty much go to Toys Hut for every squishy I ever get now because other places sell out fast, I think because they are very viral on YouTube and I think also on Instagram.

And the man that works at Toys Hut has squishes like a mega cheese and I think a mega peach and I know that he also has a crunchy butter and pudding and a strawberry.

At times he lets you squish other squishies. He also has a ton of different types of dumplings. He has a mega dumpling or more and some other mega squishies and a lot of NeeDoh nice cubes and he sells a dream drop and a fuzz ball and a jelly fish.

I think sometimes he gives you discounts. I heard about Toys Hut from my friend Amy from Live Oak Elementary. She told me here was a store at the Capitola Mall and that the sign had a picture of a three-eyed monster on it. After school I went to the mall and saw the store that Amy told me about and it was a three-eyed monster.
