Francisco Jiménez’s La Mariposa and Breaking Through
Mexican Heritage Plaza 1700 Alum Rock Ave., San JoseTeatro Visión presents Francisco Jiménez’s La Mariposa and Breaking Through, adapted for the stage by Leo Cortez. Jiménez’s memoirs have resonated across generations, in their message of love, determination, and the importance of one’s mentors. In La Mariposa, a young Panchito arrives in the U.S. with his family, and finds his way amid a life of constant moving and in a school where he doesn’t understand a word his teacher says. As he watches his classroom caterpillar transform into a butterfly, he too begins to learn to spread his wings. Breaking Through follows him to his teenage years, where Panchito comes to love school and reading. A dream to become a teacher awakens in him. But when his responsibility to his family clashes against his own desires, he must navigate the competing priorities that face him. The novels are presented as two one-act plays performed together—La Mariposa in Spanish and Breaking Through in English. Both plays include projected supertitles in English and in Spanish.
ParkStage Youth
Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park 144 School St., Santa CruzParkStage Youth is a new program for 8-13 year olds to learn and share history through performance. Students will meet Mondays and Thursdays from April 8th to May 16th, 3:30-5pm at the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park to learn and rehearse an original story of local Santa Cruz history. They will perform twice outdoors on the lawn at the Mission State Park on the weekend of May 17th. Students will gather to research, rehearse, and perform a short play telling a story from Santa Cruz history. Every student who registers will receive a role (and so should be ready to perform in front of an audience). After a few meetings of getting to know each other, students will receive roles. They will be expected to memorize lines, and do further investigative research on their historical person and coinciding events of the story as they unfolded here in Santa Cruz. Much of this work can be done during their rehearsal time here at the park. By the end of the process, they should be comfortable understanding the motivations of their historical character, and some of the pressures of life here in the time period. They will also be able to pass this story on in a complex and collaborative manner, by performing the story clearly and honestly together, for audiences in two performances. This program is free as part of the offerings of California State Parks, but a $20 material fee for set and props is asked per student.
