Unlike a typical board game meetup where players are expected to know games or organize themselves, The Game Night Collective provides a curated experience. Each event includes a library of 30+ board games, guided game teaching, hosted featured games, community announcements, raffles, and opportunities to connect with other players. Whether you arrive alone or with a group, the goal is to make it easy to sit down and start playing. The flagship event takes place every Monday at The CRUZ Room, where attendees can enjoy open gaming, learn two featured games taught by founder Courtney Laschkewitsch, participate in trivia, browse the Merch Chest, and become part of Santa Cruz’s growing tabletop gaming community. At its core, The Game Night Collective exists to bring people together through board games. It combines the structure and consistency of a trivia company with the creativity, strategy, and social connection of modern tabletop gaming, creating a space where newcomers and experienced gamers alike can feel welcome.

InterAct Open Mic at Satori Arts. FREE community poetry jam featuring David Allen Sullivan and Ignatius Valentine Aloysius Are you ready to get your poetry on? Join us on Sept. 1, 2026 at Satori Arts for InterAct, a FREE open mic night, from 7-9 pm, featuring David Allen Sullivan and Ignatius Valentine Aloysius as they read from their latest book, Everything I Touch Is—& Isn’t—You. In Everything I Touch Is—& Isn’t—You, David Allen Sullivan and Ignatius Valentine Aloysius engage in a daring poetic conversation, weaving poems from one another’s lines and inventing new collaborative forms. Written in a time of political fracture, the poems insist on attention, tenderness, and survival. The collection moves through grief, love, politics, and bearing witness, dissolving the boundaries between self and other to reveal a shared, living voice. Former Santa Cruz county poet laureate, David Allen Sullivan won the Mary Ballard Chapbook poetry prize for Take Wing. His book Black Butterflies over Baghdad was selected for the Hilary Tham Capital Collection by Tim Seibles. He teaches at Cabrillo College, where he edits the Porter Gulch Review with his students. Ignatius Valentine Aloysius earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Northwestern University, Chicago, where he teaches. He is the author of the literary novel Fishhead. Republic of Want (Tortoise Books, 2020), & his prose and poetry have appeared in many journals. Ignatius is the current host & curator of the long-running reading series Sunday Salon Chicago. He serves as Co-Chair of the Curatorial Board at Ragdale Foundation, where he is also a Board of Trustees member. Come share your spoken word work or poetry with the community, or come out to support our local readers! Sign up to read starting at 6:30 pm. Limited seating. For more information, visit https://www.satoriarts.org/upcoming-events. 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. Free. Satori Arts, 815 Almar, #9, Santa Cruz (warehouse building near the back, follow signs)

Bookshop Santa Cruz welcomes Paula Arai (Bringing Zen Home) for a reading and signing of her new book Of Mud and Lotuses: Dreaming the Lives of Buddhist Women—a unique blend of personal reflection, creative histories, and interview-based nonfiction that vividly imagines the lives of Buddhist women over 2,500 years. Of Mud and Lotuses illuminates the hardships, resilience, and creative ways in which Buddhist women have applied the Dharma to daily life—often in ways that history has ignored.

The Ocean Film Festival World Tour, now in its 13th year, is set to make a splash in 2026, returning with a powerful and visually stunning line-up of films that celebrate the ocean from every angle — above the surface, beneath the waves, and deep into the stories that connect us all to the sea. This year’s tour promises an unforgettable night out for ocean lovers, featuring six remarkable films. From high-stakes adventure and record-breaking journeys to intimate portraits of marine life and environmental restoration, the 2026 program is packed with breathtaking cinematography and inspiring characters. One of the standout films in the 2026 program is The Raftsmen, an epic story of courage and endurance. Twelve unlikely adventurers from seven different countries come together to attempt a feat few would dare imagine — crossing the world’s largest ocean on three handmade wooden rafts, guided only by the sun and stars. Battling storms, starvation, and the psychological toll of life at sea, their six-month journey remains the longest raft expedition ever completed. Now, fifty years later, the original 16mm footage has been beautifully restored into 4K, allowing modern audiences to witness the sheer scale of this once-in-a-lifetime ocean odyssey.

Presented at Peace United Church in Santa Cruz, Backroads of the Americas is an intimate solo concert with Latin Grammy-winning guitarist Diego García “Twanguero,” tracing a musical journey through Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Rooted in Spanish folk and shaped by years of travel, Diego’s music moves effortlessly between evocative melodies, Latin American rhythms, and American roots. Alone with the guitar, he explores the instrument’s full expressive range—rhythmic, melodic, percussive, and deeply human. The program draws from The Brooklyn Session, Argentina Songbook, Carreteras Secundarias Vol. 1 & 2, Panamerica, and original, unreleased material shaped by years on the road. Internationally known as Twanguero, Diego García is a Latin Grammy-winning guitarist praised by NPR as “one of the most fascinating guitarists I’ve ever heard.” His distinctive sound brings together Spanish folk, Latin American influences, and American roots music in a style entirely his own. An intimate evening for guitar lovers, world music audiences, and curious listeners alike. Diego García “Twanguero” — Solo Spanish Guitar One guitar. Many roads. A lifetime of stories.
