SUMMARY:Pitch In All County Cleanup Day
DESCRIPTION:The Third Annual Pitch In All County Cleanup Day is set for May 9\, inviting residents\, families\, schools\, and organizations across Santa Cruz County to come together in a shared effort to keep the community clean and protect local ecosystems. \nOrganizers encourage participants to sign up in advance at pitchinsantacruz.org. Individuals and groups can register their cleanup efforts by providing contact information\, estimated number of participants\, and specific meetup details\, including location\, date\, and time. Some groups are choosing to host cleanups in the days leading up to or following May 9\, and all registered events will be posted online so others can join. \nParticipants are asked to include clear meetup locations to make it easy for volunteers to find and join cleanup efforts. For those still deciding where to help\, the county has identified several “hot spots” in need of attention\, particularly in inland areas that are often overlooked. \nRecommended cleanup hot spots include Paulsen Road in Watsonville; Buena Vista\, especially around the landfill area; Harkin Slough Road; Lakeview Road; Larkin Valley Road; Murphy Crossing; Ranport Road on the way to Buena Vista; San Andreas Road; Bear Creek; and Brommer Street. Organizers encourage volunteers to consider these areas where cleanup efforts can make a significant impact. \nAll volunteers are required to complete a participation waiver before joining a cleanup. Waivers should be collected and kept by organizers\, with adults permitted to sign on behalf of minors. \nTo help track the collective impact\, participants are also encouraged to download and complete a Data Card\, recording totals from their cleanup. These results will be compiled by Save Our Shores and reported to both county and state agencies. A limited number of printed Data Cards will be available on a first-come basis. \nSchools are invited to take part by organizing student-led cleanups on campus during the week leading up to May 9\, helping build awareness and community involvement among young people. \nA limited supply of cleanup tools\, including pickers and Data Cards\, will be available for participating groups. In Santa Cruz\, supplies can be picked up at the Santa Cruz County Land Trust offices at 911 Center Street. In Watsonville\, supplies will be available at the office of Supervisor Hernandez at 150 Westridge Drive. Participants will be asked to sign out equipment and return it after use. \nOrganizers also encourage volunteers to take photos of their cleanup efforts. Images of teams in action will be shared on the event website and social media. Photos can be submitted via email with the group’s name and location. \nAbove all\, the event is designed to be both meaningful and enjoyable. Limited street parking available on Josephine St\, volunteers can park at the Gateway Plaza shopping center and walk along the levee path to the meet up location. \nHow to Prepare: \n\nAll volunteers must register to participate\, register here.\nWe recommend that all volunteers wear closed-toed shoes\, dress in layers\, wear sun protection\, and bring a filled reusable water bottle. Save Our Shores encourages volunteers to avoid single-use plastics at our cleanups.\nAll cleanup materials are provided\, including buckets\, grabbers\, and gloves. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own.\nYou can download the Save Our Shores Marine Tally App (Apple\, Google) in advance of the cleanup and use it to record the debris you collect\, or you can use the paper data cards that we will provide at the event.\nEvery participant must complete a volunteer waiver. DESCRIPTION:COME ENJOY A DAY OF COMMUNITY WHILE FUNDRAISING BY PLEDGING A HIKE FOR PEACE.  \nThe event is set in a gorgeous location located in the upper campus of the school (at Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel). \nPledge a student or pledge yourself and  hike the 8 Verses Trail. \nOur annual Hike4Peace event is an opportunity to benefit others both locally and globally.\n10% of proceeds go to a charitty selected by Tara Redwood Students. \nWe focus the event activities on  Tara Redwood School’s values and facilitate activities for the entire family with the intention too celebrate World Peace\nthrough Inner Peace.\nThe Hike-A-Thon is a great opportunity for all to set  intention for inner peace \nEnjoy several arts & crafts tables\, face-painting and live music by a local talent. Great raffle prizes too so GET YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS AND WIN PRIZES! \n Take part in the fun by collecting each of the 7  CCC color bracelets during the HIKE-A-THON\, symbolic of the qualities of  the\n school’s CCC  attributes. The hike-a-thon trail is 1 mile long and it is situated along the “8 Verses trail”.  \nThe trail is inspired by the 8 Verses in Tibetan Buddhist teaching on how to transform challenges into happiness and peace.\nWe have 7 color string bracelets that a pledged hiker can collect each time they get to Verse 8.

DESCRIPTION:Art & Ecology Summer Camp invites young artists ages 7–13 to explore large-scale mural-making\, storytelling\, and collaboration in a weeklong program led by professional muralist Jessica Evanjelista at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH). Drawing inspiration from the museum’s galleries\, campers will learn how murals communicate history\, community\, and personal narratives while experimenting with sketching\, color theory\, composition\, and collaborative design. SUMMARY:InterAct Open Mic with Featured Singer Kay Martin
DESCRIPTION:InterAct Open Mic at Satori Arts. FREE community poetry jam featuring singer Kay Martin\n\n\nAre you ready to get your poetry on? Join us on June 16\, 2026 at Satori Arts for InterAct\, a FREE open mic night\, from 7-9 pm\, featuring Kay Martin. \nKay’s longtime day job was teaching (Writing+ at UCSC) for fifteen years\, which morphed into writing/ editing/ consulting upon going freelance in 2000. But she also always performed (acting and directing)\, receiving her PhD in theatre from Berkeley. (She’s also a mother of two amazing people\, Niranjan and Manjula.) Singing was a late-breaking development! In the late 90s Kay studied singing at Cabrillo and by 2000 was fronting a jazz band every Friday at Positively Front St. (until it burned down~). She led a trio longstanding at the Shadowbrook—and elsewhere around. She released the straight-ahead jazz album Softly in 2002\, featuring wonderful local musicians Tim Volpicello\, Art Alm\, Stan Poplin\, Steve Robertson\, and Scott Nordgren. Kay moved to LA in 2002 and sang across the southland\, in downtown LA club residencies but especially on the west side—many years at Santino’s in Santa Monica with many wonderful accompanists. She also had her mom for long years until her death\, and grandsons regularly for even longer\, almost to Covid—as well as working. But music happened\, always. Released in 2015\, her groundbreaking Four Sweets album and Afro-Brazilian rhythms project featured world-class LA players Liz Kinnon\, Hussain Jiffry\, Enzo Todesco\, Kirk Brundage\, Roberto Montero\, and Dick Mitchell. It won accolades and awards from radio stations and online blogs: Best International Album nominee; Best Single for le Saboteur; Best Song of the Year for Dulce Amor/Day After Day. Kay has also sung with indie rock groups both north and south. Under Covid\, Kay was determined to develop music for more people and to take it out to them—remember the Italians singing on their balconies in early Covid? She would do “Pop-up” street concerts like so many performers have done\, from Moliere to modernity—and with the right tech and help\, she did\, starting in Santa Monica. In 2022-2023 she traveled and lived in Europe\, Wales\, and Morocco\, performing that new eclectic repertoire of Brazilian\, jazz\, indie and soul. Kay recently released these recordings one at a time as the Prodigal Tomboy album. She is content to be back in these Santa Cruz area communities\, which her heart never really left. \nCome share your spoken word work or poetry with the community\, or come out to support our local readers!
