California Mother of the Year Susan Tatsui-D’Arcy is spreading the word about emergency planning! As California’s Mother of the Year, I’d like to make sure that we’re prepared to protect our homes, families, and pets as we enter FIRE SEASON. Everyone knows that it’s a matter of “WHEN” not “IF” there will be another catastrophic wildfire like we had last year when both northern (Paradise Camp Fire) and southern (Woolsey Fire) destroyed almost 20,000 structures, burned almost 250,000 acres, and killed 88 people. So let’s work together to prevent a fire or earthquake from taking out our homes and neighborhoods. There are a number of EASY things you can do to prepare for an emergency. I’ve created an easy checklist anyone can use to start preparing for a disaster. The checklist is located on the AmericanMothersCalifornia.com website here, and I’ve also recorded a 30-minute podcast that goes into a lot more detail – you can listen to it here, or find GakkoMom on iTunes and subscribe to my podcast. Please take a few minutes to read the checklist, or listen to the podcast when you have some free time. With a little bit of preparedness, you can save precious things – and even lives. Let’s do this! Susan Tatsui-D’Arcy 2019 California Mother of the Year AmericanMothersCalifornia.com info@americanmotherscalifornia.com

What do you want to see at the dying Capitola Mall? About 200 people showed up for a meeting with planners about what could and should happen to the Capitola Mall, which is largely deserted, but still has some great places for kids, including the Museum of Discovery and Giggles and Wiggles. Here’s what the Sentinel wrote: “Capitola and Santa Cruz County residents were not hesitant to give their input about the future of the mall in a community meeting Tuesday night in the Sears building. “Mall owner Merlone Geier Partners, who purchased the mall from Macerich in 2016 and owns 67% of the property, shared its plans for the “Capitola Town Square” at the meeting. The square is expected to be a mixed-use outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment center with a residential component. Nearly 200 people attended the forum, which followed a presentation to the Capitola city council May 9 and a community survey conducted last year.” Read more here: https://www.santacruzsentinel.com/2019/06/12/capitola-mall-to-be-rebuilt-as-capitola-town-square/ What would be your ideas for the mall’s best possible use? Could it be another Santana Row and bring some class and housing to the area?

Dignity Health Dominican Hospital Expansion Dignity Health Dominican Hospital will undergo a $360 million renovation and expansion to ensure that the growing Santa Cruz County community can access world class health care now and into the future. The project will allow for advanced technology, new state-of-the-art facilities, and even more innovative healing spaces. The Dominican Hospital Pavilion expansion and improvement project, slated to begin in late 2019, will add 84,000 square feet to the existing hospital—without increasing the hospital’s current footprint—and will include construction of a three-level parking garage with 410 parking spaces. “Dominican Hospital has been taking care of our community for generations, and this expansion will mean increased access to the most advanced health care available, right here in Santa Cruz,” said Nanette Mickiewicz, MD, Dominican Hospital President. “While we are still in the early stages of planning, we are excited about the improvements to care and convenience the Pavilion project will bring to our patients and visitors.” The Pavilion project will convert all semi-private patient rooms to private rooms, and create a new surgery department complete with larger operating rooms to accommodate more advanced procedures and prepare for the technology of the future. Patient care will not be impacted by construction. The new structures will be energy efficient, with LED lighting for energy savings and highly directional light that does not contribute to light pollution. Landscaping will emphasize drought-resistant and native plants. The planning team also is exploring installation of solar power. Devenney Group, Ltd. will serve as the project architect, and McCarthy Building Companies will manage construction. Landscape architecture will be designed and installed by Joni L. Janecki and Associates. Hamilton Land Planning will oversee all aspects of project planning and management. The project is in the very earliest planning stages. A recent meeting with the hospital’s neighbors to gather feedback was the first step in the process. Dominican Hospital submitted a Design Permit and Planned Unit Development (PUD) permit application to the Santa Cruz County planning department on June 10. The project timeline is several years, but Dominican Hospital will prioritize construction of the parking garage, which may be complete as soon as 18 months after the project is approved by the county. While the majority of the project will be funded by Dignity Health, a portion will be raised through a community campaign led by the Dominican Hospital Foundation. A local band serenades the newly arrived with old time Italian, Spanish and bluegrass standards while they drink a hot beverage and await the first course. At 10am plates of seasonal cuisine made with ingredients sourced from the markets begin rolling out. As the guests eat and visit farmers and chefs share their knowledge and perspective regarding agriculture, community and consumer choice within the food system.

Day Care Workers Seek Union Yes, those who take care of our kids are some of the worst paid and most deserving people in society. Teachers should be paid like sports stars, given what they do to shape our world. Now, childcare workers are seeking to get a fair wage. Here’s an article in the Sentinel Here’s one summary: “Child care is prohibitively expensive for even middle-class families in much of California. At the same time, the majority of the workers who care for the state’s youngest children are paid so little they qualify for public assistance themselves, according to one estimate. Now, with the state coffers flush, many providers are pushing for this bill — along with a whole slew of child care related legislation aimed at making things easier for families and providers alike.” What do you think?

Santa Cruz County Celebrates all Three Hospitals Receiving the Baby-Friendly Designation All three birthing facilities in Santa Cruz County– Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center, Dominican Hospital Santa Cruz, and Watsonville Community Hospital—have earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly Hospital designation. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program that requires hospitals to provide mothers with the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding and/or safely feed formula. To earn the Baby-Friendly designation hospitals must complete 10 rigorous steps, which include developing policies, training staff, and educating patients and then passing a comprehensive onsite review by surveyors. Other key requirements include emphasizing mother-baby bonding with practices such as placing the baby on the mother’s chest immediately after birth, and having mother and newborn share the same room. “The staff at our hospitals spent tireless hours preparing for their reviews and deserve our recognition and appreciation,” said Dana Wagner who is chair of the County Breastfeeding Coalition. Baby-Friendly Hospital certification lasts for 5 years before a hospital has to apply for re-certification. In addition, for the third year in a row, Santa Cruz County ranked highest in the state for any and exclusive breastfeeding in the 2018 California in-hospital breastfeeding initiation rate report. “This ranking really is a consequence of the Baby-Friendly system and practice changes our community has implemented,” said Kimlin McDaniel Keith, staffer for the Breastfeeding Coalition. There will be celebration of this landmark achievement on Thursday, February 28 at 7 pm, following the 5:30 screening of the short film Giving Birth in America at the Del Mar Theatre, 1124 Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz. Many congratulations to Dominican Hospital Santa Cruz, Watsonville Community Hospital, and Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center for earning this prestigious designation.

Our PJ Masks Contest Winner! Penelope Lindle, 3, won our contest for free tickets to see the “PJ Masks Save the Day Live” show in San Jose on Feb. 20. They had a great night. Growing Up in Santa Cruz was there too, and it really was a terrific show for toddlers, with music and dancing, acrobatics and professional use of screens and lights that rivaled a Broadway show. With a 6 p.m. start time, it wasn’t a bad drive, either. We’d go back. Watch our site for future giveaways at area amusement parks, concerts and shows. Penelope and her mother Susan had great mother-daughter bonding at the PJ Masks Live show.
