MAH Launches a Art and History Pop-Up in Watsonville Goodwill 4:00 pm
MAH Launches a Art and History Pop-Up in Watsonville Goodwill @ Watsonville Goodwill, 470 Main St, Watsonville, CA 95076
    Jan 4 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
What do a museum and a thrift store have in common? Surprisingly, their mission statements both focus on building a stronger, more empowered community. Goodwill Central Coast works to eliminate barriers to opportunity through their inclusive job opportunities and programs. The MAH uses art and history as a catalyst to empower and bring people together. In August, Goodwill Central Coast staff reached out to the MAH looking for a way to bridge those missions together and create something unique for their community. The result? A yearlong bilingual pop-up exhibition inside their downtown Watsonville storefront. The pop-up includes sculptures made out of salvaged Goodwill items, historic images of Watsonville from the MAH Archive, and new images taken by Carlos Campos, a local graduate student who grew up in Watsonville and works at the Watsonville Digital Nest. The sculptures were made by over 300 kids, neighbors, and friends at a free, drop-in craft night in November at the MAH. Visitors crafted items into makeshift butterflies, to symbolize the transformation of these items destined for the landfill into public art. The results are a mix of hilarious (ex: a cheese grater Pokémon card butterfly) and beautiful (ex: an old book carved into wings). This exhibition blends together two seemingly different organizations and makes something fun, accessible, and unique to Watsonville. The mix of art made by residents of Santa Cruz County gives people ownership of what’s on display. Historical images of Watsonville spark conversations and memories of proud community members. And current images, by a local well-loved non-profit, captures the depth and beauty of the city today. All this will be celebrated at the Grand Opening party on January 4th. There will be a free, drop-in art activity hosted by the MAH and opportunities to ask questions and dig deeper into the archive images on display. Paul Skenazy: Temper CA 7:00 pm
Paul Skenazy: Temper CA @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
    Jan 10 @ 7:00 pm
“[An] elegant and unforgettable novella.” — Elizabeth McKenzie, author of The Portable Veblen   Bookshop presents local author Paul Skenazy for a book discussion and signing of his new novel, Temper CA. Joy Temper grew up wandering the woods of Temper, California, a Gold Rush town her family helped establish in the 1840s. When she returns to Temper for her grandfather’s funeral, she discovers that the stories she’s long traded on about her hippie upbringing have little to do with reality. Her struggles to face who she once was, and what she now desires, force her to confront family secrets and long-suppressed memories in a novella both familial and romantic, contemporary and historical.   PAUL SKENAZY grew up in Chicago, studied at the University of Chicago and Stanford, and taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has published essays, stories, and reviews in a range of newspapers and magazines, as well as critical work on James M. Cain and other noir writers. He lives in Santa Cruz with the poet Farnaz Fatemi.   For press inquiries, please contact: Amy Toland, Managing Editor | Miami University Press mupress@MiamiOH.edu | (513) 529-2602

Lyndsay Faye: The Paragon Hotel 7:00 pm
Lyndsay Faye: The Paragon Hotel @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
    Jan 17 @ 7:00 pm
“A riveting multilevel thriller of race, sex, and mob violence that throbs with menace as it hums with wit.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)   Bookshop is delighted to welcome Lyndsay Faye, author of the best-selling (and staff favorites!) Jane Steele and The Gods of Gotham, for a reading and signing of her new novel, The Paragon Hotel—a historical thriller that follows Alice “Nobody” from Prohibition-era Harlem to Portland’s the Paragon Hotel. Vivid, evocative and meticulously crafted, THE PARAGON HOTEL brilliantly captures the terror of being black in segregated, racist Portland circa 1921, as well as mob-controlled Harlem in the early twentieth century (“A world in which the monsters were the monarchs”). In Faye’s capable hands, the book’s indelible characters and startling historical detail recreate a bygone era completely relevant to today’s social issues. The result is a mesmerizing tale reaffirming Faye’s reputation as a master storyteller, and the language alone is worth the price of admission.   LYNDSAY FAYE is the author of five critically acclaimed books: Jane Steele, which was nominated for an Edgar for Best Novel; Dust and Shadow; The Gods of Gotham; also Edgar-nominated; Seven for a Secret; and The Fatal Flame. Faye, a true New Yorker in the sense she was born elsewhere, lives in New York City with her husband, Gabriel.   For press inquiries, please contact: Katie McKee, Executive Publicity Manager | G.P. Putnam’s Sons/Penguin Random House kmckee@prh.com  (412) 561-1207

Kristin J. Wilson: Others’ Milk 7:00 pm
Kristin J. Wilson: Others’ Milk @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
    Jan 24 @ 7:00 pm
“With rich detail, Others’ Milk demonstrates how breastfeeding is a process, an identity, and a performance that is not simply about nourishing children, but one that reveals larger meanings of gender, sexuality, race, inequality—and the limiting ways we imagine bodies can and should be used.” —Jennifer Reich, author of Fixing Families: Parents, Power, and the Child Welfare System   Breastfeeding rarely conforms to the idealized Madonna-and-baby image seen in old artwork, now re-cast in celebrity breastfeeding photo spreads and pro-breastfeeding ad campaigns. The personal accounts in Kristin J. Wilson’s OTHERS’ MILK illustrate just how messy and challenging and unpredictable it can be—an uncomfortable reality in the contemporary context of high-stakes motherhood in which “successful” breastfeeding proves one’s maternal mettle.   Kristin J. Wilson argues that while breastfeeding is never going to be the feasible choice for everyone, it should be accessible to anyone, and explores “exceptional breastfeeders” who find creative ways to feed and care for their children—such as by inducing lactation, sharing milk, or exclusively pumping. This fascinating book illuminates how these mothers want to adhere to the societal ideal of giving them “the best” but sometimes have to face off with dogmatic authorities in order to do so.   KRISTIN J. WILSON is chair of the anthropology department at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. She is the author of Not Trying: Infertility, Childlessness, and Ambivalence.   For press inquiries, please contact: Courtney Brach | Rutgers University Press courtney.brach@rutgers.edu  | (848) 445-7775

Ken Weisner: Cricket to Star 4:00 pm
Ken Weisner: Cricket to Star @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
    Jan 27 @ 4:00 pm
“Whether he’s describing the Truckee river and its ‘singing mouths’ or riffing on ants in his bed as ‘wise men come to the Bethlehem of my body,’ [Weisner] imbues his lines with exuberance and grace… I’m reminded of the bards, those consummate poets and singers who traveled the countryside. ‘He could balance chairs on his nose while juggling plates, or sing arias blindfolded,’ Weisner writes in ‘Dream.’ He might be dreaming of himself.”—Ellen Bass, award-winning Santa Cruz- based poet and educator   CRICKET TO STAR, Ken Weisner’s third poetry collection, begins with nature poems that meditate on solitude, the wilderness within, and poems of childhood—then moves into the manuscript’s underworld, mourning the rupture of a marriage. Section three meditates on remaking the psyche and journeys as well into elegy, meditation, and the refuge of irony; section four re-enters the natural world, the world of longing, and the healing gaze of love.   KEN WEISNER enjoys his day job as a De Anza College Community College English teacher, and both advises and edits Red Wheelbarrow, their literary journal. He coordinates, with Poetry Center San José, the Red Wheelbarrow Poetry Prize. For fifteen years, Ken edited Quarry West out of Porter College, UCSC. Ken has published two previous volumes of his own poetry with Santa Cruz’s Hummingbird Press, including Anything on Earth in 2010. Ken’s poems have appeared most recently in Perfume River Poetry Review, Catamaran, Caesura, Nine Mile, Porter Gulch Review, and Phren-Z. Ken also teaches poetry writing at Salinas Valley State Prison.   For event inquiries, please contact: Chorel Centers, Events Manager | Bookshop Santa Cruz bookshopevents@gmail.com | (831) 423-3232
