Black History Month Book Talk by Civil Rights Veteran Maria Gitin 2:00 pm
Black History Month Book Talk by Civil Rights Veteran Maria Gitin
Feb 6 @ 2:00 pm
We’re kicking off our Black History Month celebration with an exciting discussion with Civil Rights author Maria Gitin. The one hour presentation will include a slide show, stories, brief discussion and book signing. United Way CEO Keisha Frost Browder opens with a special introduction. After the successful march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, African American civil rights workers launched an all-out effort to register thousands of new Black voters in the Deep South. A few hundred white youth were invited to join them. Santa Cruz County resident and NAACP member Maria Gitin was an idealistic 19 year old college freshman at San Francisco State College who responded to Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to action. She will read from her memoir, “This Bright Light of Ours: Stories from the Voting Rights Fight,” (University of Alabama Press) which is the only in-depth account of this summer from a participant perspective. Former Watsonville resident and nationally acclaimed civil rights activist and photographer Bob Fitch contributed historic photos to the book, some of which will be presented in a slide show along with Gitin’s talk. Maria Gitin has been the Martin Luther King Jr. Day keynote speaker for King County in Seattle; for the U.S. Army Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey and for the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, among her many other public presentations. She is curator of an art and history exhibit, “Vote! Your Voice is your Vote” which opens at the Santa Cruz County Government Center 3rd floor on January 27th.

Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Children of the Land 7:00 pm
Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Children of the Land @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
Feb 11 @ 7:00 pm
Bookshop Santa Cruz welcomes award-winning poet Marcelo Hernandez Castillo for a discussion and signing of his new memoir about growing up undocumented in the United States. Children of the Land recounts the sorrows and joys of a family torn apart by draconian policies and chronicles one young man’s attempt to build a future in a nation that denies his existence. “You were not a ghost even though an entire country was scared of you. No one in this story was a ghost. This was not a story.” When Marcelo Hernandez Castillo was five years old and his family was preparing to cross the border between Mexico and the United States, he suffered temporary, stress-induced blindness. Castillo regained his vision, but quickly understood that he had to move into a threshold of invisibility before settling in California with his parents and siblings. Thus began a new life of hiding in plain sight and of paying extraordinarily careful attention at all times for fear of being truly seen. Before Castillo was one of the most celebrated poets of a generation, he was a boy who perfected his English in the hopes that he might never seem extraordinary. With beauty, grace, and honesty, Castillo recounts his and his family’s encounters with a system that treats them as criminals for seeking safe, ordinary lives. He writes of the Sunday afternoon when he opened the door to an ICE officer who had one hand on his holster, of the hours he spent making a fake social security card so that he could work to support his family, of his father’s deportation and the decade that he spent waiting to return to his wife and children only to be denied reentry, and of his mother’s heartbreaking decision to leave her children and grandchildren so that she could be reunited with her estranged husband and retire from a life of hard labor. Children of the Land distills the trauma of displacement, illuminates the human lives behind the headlines and serves as a stunning meditation on what it means to be a man and a citizen. Marcelo Hernandez Castillo is the author of Cenzontle, winner of the A. Poulin, Jr. prize, winner of the 2019 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award in poetry, a finalist for the Norther California Book Award and named a best book of 2018 by NPR and the New York Public Library. As one of the founders of the Undocupoets campaign, he is a recipient of the Barnes and Noble “Writers for Writers” Award. He holds a B.A. from Sacramento State University and was the first undocumented student to graduate from the Helen Zell Writers Program at the University of Michigan. His work has appeared or is featured in The New York Times, The Paris Review, People Magazine, and PBS Newshour, among others. He lives in Marysville, California where he teaches poetry to incarcerated youth and also teaches at the Ashland University Low-Res MFA program. This free event will take place at Bookshop Santa Cruz. Chairs for open seating are usually set up about an hour before the event begins. If you have any ADA accommodation requests, please email [email protected] by February 9th.

Craig Vachon, The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley 7:00 pm
Craig Vachon, The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
Feb 13 @ 7:00 pm
Bookshop welcomes Craig Vachon for a reading and signing of The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley, his entertaining tale of a befuddled but highly capable venture capitalist who is compelled to chart his own course on a global quest to save his new brain-computer interface tool from falling into some very, very wrong hands. Ralph Gibsen isn’t your typical spy. In fact, he may not be a spy at all. He’s lumpy, blundering and abysmal at chatting up the fairer sex. Yet, he is attracting a significant amount of attention from the intelligence community. After all, as a 30-year Silicon Valley mainstay, he can phish your passwords, bust firewalls, and has developed software used by millions to circumvent government censorship. And now, he thinks he has stumbled upon a cabal who is pushing to misuse his own technology for world domination. Ralph helps create an educational Tool that maps a learner’s neurological processes and pinpoints the exact moment a student learns. But the Tool can also manipulate people’s beliefs. At least, that what several influential people think. Soon, Ralph finds himself the target of increasingly complex attacks on his businesses, reputation, freedom, and life. Ralph enlists an eclectic group of ‘frenemies’ to thwart this nefarious plot. McKenna may or may not still work for the CIA. Beautiful Eva may work for the Chinese government, who wants the Tool for themselves. Even Ralph’s lovely wife Jen could be involved… Ralph simply isn’t equipped to figure it out. And the world is closing in. “Knucklehead is like being shot out of an Ethernet cable lined with exotic travel and baroque paintings and landing on a sea of electricity.” —Peterson Conway About the author: The character of Ralph Gibsen, the protagonist of The Knucklehead of Silicon Valley, isn’t based on the author G. Craig Vachon. Not in any way. Sure, they both are big, goofy-looking lummoxes and they are married to beautiful, smart women that could have coupled more advantageously. And yes, Ralph and Craig are both overly lucky, Silicon Valley-based venture capital investors living on the beaches near Santa Cruz, CA. And both spend too much time in business-class seats flying to strange places and meeting exotic people. But that’s where the similarities end. No, really. Read more about the author here.

Feb 16 @ 10:30 am – 4:00 pm
This Valentine’s Day weekend, explore the fascinating world and interesting adaptations of northern elephant seals during a special weekend celebration. Unique pop-up exhibits will reveal natural history, migration strategies, and allow visitors to become citizen scientists (helping out UC Santa Cruz researchers). As a citizen scientist, learn about elephant seals, sea lions, and seabirds that visit Año Nuevo Island, an important natural reserve north of Santa Cruz; then analyze drone photos to identify and count different types of animals that visit the island. Top the weekend off with February Science Sunday speakers Dr. Roxanne Beltran and Sarah Wood who will provide insight into their lives as scientists as well as exciting facts about elephant seals. Special Valentine’s-themed arts and crafts are offered throughout the weekend.
Science Sunday – I Spy from the Sky 12:30 pm
Science Sunday – I Spy from the Sky @ Seymour Marine Discovery Center
Feb 16 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
Drones Give a New Perspective for Marine Mammal Science When researchers step onto Año Nuevo Island, they are welcomed by a deafening symphony: sea lions barking, elephant seals roaring, gulls cawing, and cormorants grunting. An individual researcher is most likely outnumbered by animals 10,000:1. To understand what is happening on the island, scientists need to count each animal—a nearly impossible task. Luckily, help has arrived in the form of an authorized research drone which has taken aerial photos of island life over the past four years. The research team has worked to measure and count animals in the drone photos by developing a citizen science platform, www.sealcount.com. Please join Roxanne Beltran and Sarah Wood to learn about this project, see their preliminary results, and find out how you can get involved.

JoAnne Silver Jones, Headstrong 7:00 pm
JoAnne Silver Jones, Headstrong @ Bookshop Santa Cruz
Feb 25 @ 7:00 pm
Bookshop Santa Cruz welcomes JoAnne Silver Jones for a discussion and signing of her new book, Headstrong. After a sudden assault by a stranger left Jones with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), fractured hands, and PTSD, she learned—with the help of a community that gave her the foundations of hope—to live with TBI in a society bursting with violence. She didn’t see the hammer. For a fraction of a second JoAnne Jones saw a young black face, framed by a black hoodie, and then she descended into a place where she felt and saw nothing. Jones survived this sudden assault by a stranger, but it left her with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), fractured hands, and PTSD. Headstrong tells the story of how she learned to live with the daily challenges of TBI. It brings the reader into a life traumatized by violence and set in the context of a society full of violence and vocal, visible white supremacists. Woven throughout Jones’s account are the stories of how medical professionals, friends, family, and strangers became a foundation strong enough to hold her during the worst of times, and to give her the buoyancy to find a path toward hope. “Eloquently told, Jones invites us into her harrowing journey from violence and brain injury to hope. With unflinching honesty, she shows how her determination to heal, led her to excavate the emotional legacy of her family and develop the emotional muscle to move beyond being a victim. If ever we needed a story of resilience against tough odds, now is the time.” —Hilary Jacobs Hendel, author of the award-winning book, It’s Not Always Depression JoAnne Jones is Professor Emeritus at Springfield College in Massachusetts, where she worked for twenty-five years. While at Springfield College, Dr. Jones served as Associate Dean of the School of Human Services and Acting Dean of the School of Social Work. Before Springfield College, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and an Assistant Professor of Social Welfare at the University of Calgary, School of Social Welfare. Her teaching and research focused primarily on social justice issues. In addition to teaching, she has consulted with public and private organizations in relation to diversity, inclusiveness, and excellence. She is a cofounder of the firm Diversityworks Consulting.
